Project Home - reveal of the guest bedroom + costings and details
We gave our spare room a glow up....
I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to write to you. Apologies. December is always a manic month for all of us, and on top of that Dan and I decided to give our spare room a glow up ahead of Charlie coming back from Uni for Christmas.
Back story:
This small box room as seen many a transformation in the 19 years of living here. It’s been a storage space, a bathroom, a boys bedroom, and now it is my study / spare room.
It’s a funny space, a large window overlooking the back of the house and the terraced gardens of our neighbours. Small enough that a single bed can fit width wise, but not big enough for it to be used as a bedroom with a wardrobe and all the stuff that a teen might need. We tried, Rufus tried. It never really worked for him.
So when Charlie left home for Uni, Ru happily moved upstairs into Charlie’s old bedroom in the attic. Leaving this tiny awkward space to be left as a bit of a dump.
Before

This room was painted in dark blue/black, Railings by Farrow & Ball. A stipulation from Ru when he was about 10. But the colour always looked shabby. The matte chalky finish showed the dust and I never liked how it always felt half finished. The mismatched furniture and all his ‘stuff’ didn’t help.
During
The plan I detailed in a previous post (below):
It was to give the space two zones, a sleeping zone and a work zone. We did this by creating a bed nook. Panelling the three sides around the bed, and the ceiling to give it a cosy enclosed feeling. Plus we added boxed in shelving at one end.
The room was painted in a deep rich bronze khaki green, Rocky by Coat Paints. The whole space was colour drenched, which is something I’ve not done before. Walls, ceiling, woodwork, door and even a small dresser was painted in this luscious colour.
Upcycling
I found an old dresser on FB marketplace for £30. Gave it a sand and painted it in the same paint as the woodwork. Replaced the handles with small round brass handles we found in a junk shop last year.

After
So here is the reveal, with all the costings. I’m so proud of this little space. Just a few weeks of an hour or so a day and it’s surprising what you can get done.
